5 Movies to Watch this 4th of July
Share
One of my favorite ways to learn about history is through reading historical fiction so it should come as no surprise that it is one my favorite movie genres too!
As America's 250th Anniversary of the adopting of the Declaration of Independence approaches with this 4th of July, here are 5 movies well worth watching to help you and your children connect with the historical figures and events of the Declaration of Independence.
Keep in mind that these movies are fictitious, though based on historical facts to some degree or another, so you may need to do a little bit of teaching alongside the movies to help your children separate fact from fiction. Enjoy the movies as they are, as works of creative historical fiction and let the stories, sights, and sounds of the American Revolution and the creation of the Declaration of Independence to life on the big screen.

Best for Young Children
Liberty's Kids
Technically a TV series rather than a movie, but honestly it's the best introduction to the Declaration of Independence for young children. Watch the Liberty's Kids episodes surrounding July 1776 and your kids will get a wonderful age-appropriate introduction to the story of the Declaration of Independence. Season 1 Episodes 1-13 tells the story of independence leading up to the Declaration of Independence, or if you're short on time just watch Season 1 Episode 13 The First Fourth of July.
Best for Preteens
Johnny Tremain
A classic coming-of-age story set during the American Revolution. Produced by The Walt Disney Company in 1957, Johnny Tremain is a historical drama that gives kids a feel for colonial-era Boston and the events leading to American Independence through the story of a young apprentice silversmith whose life changes after an accident draws him into the growing patriot movement. Based on the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes.
Best for Teens
Beyond the Mask
Adventure, faith, and Revolutionary War history with enough action to keep teenagers engaged. Beyond the Mask is a 2015 American Christian historical action-adventure film that follows a former mercenary seeking redemption while trying to stop a conspiracy that threatens the birth of the United States.
Best Family Movie Night
National Treasure, 2004
A perfect Fourth of July movie! Starring Nicolas Cage and produced by Walt Disney Pictures, National Treasure is packed with references to the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers, and American history while remaining entertaining for nearly every age. (it's a family favorite at my house!)
Best Mom's Movie Night ❤️
To Philly, With Love
Put the kids to bed and watch one just for you! This lighthearted Hallmark romance is set in Philadelphia—the perfect excuse to enjoy Independence Hall, Old City, and the city's historic charm all while celebrating America's 250th!
Honorable Mentions
1776
The definitive movie about the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. Better suited for history lovers than young kids because it's a musical and dialogue-heavy, but a delight nonetheless.
John Adams
Outstanding if readers are ready for a deeper dive. The Declaration of Independence episodes are especially excellent.
The Patriot
An oldie but a goodie! Mel Gibson stars in this movie filled with great Revolutionary War action. It's more about the war itself than the Declaration and takes significant historical liberties.
